Why I am an economist (short scientific autobiography)

October 2002, Valeriy Marakulin

I was born in the family of teachers in 1956. My farther was historian, mother taught to physics. It happened so that the directors of schools, where I was studying, always were my parents - first father, then mother. I think my well abilities to mathematics became apparent in early age, but telling frankly nobody developed them specially. Mainly at free time I did that I wished to do, I liked to read, when I had an interesting book, including popular scientific literature. I studied at the school easily did not straining specially. However up to 10th year of my schooling it was a time to think about future business and I sensed a wish to enter at university and to study mathematics. To arrive the purpose and being rather opinionated, if I have an idea I am strongly going to the goal, I was seriously preparing myself to examinations and having bought a book of problems, I solved all tasks from its top to a bottom. As a result I have brilliant taken examinations and in 1973 entered at the mathematical faculty of Novosibirsk State University. It was not very easy to study for the first time, but later actions were going quite well. I was very good student in fact and usually had finest marks in mathematical disciplines. I could finish University with red diploma, but a middle mark for English did not allow to do it. I have studied this langauge later, during student's time period my mind was occupied by mathematics only. Most of all my soul liked an analysis - mathematical and functional. My favorite lector in the analysis, as for many of other students, was Gleb Pavlovich Akilov, which personally invited me to specialize in this area being my scientific leader. The problem was that up to this time he was already seriously sick, almost the whole year he was in hospital and eventually I could not work with him. In view of this de facto another person realized the management of my activities. God is my witness that I made an effort and realized all requirements of my timely chief. However in spite of I solved problem put by boos and had no remarks suddenly I have got the mark `good' instead of expected `excellent'. Identifying the fact I understood that a target is missed and decided to search another place. Being attracted a freedom of actions and thinking I very wished to be a researcher, and it seemed me I have a potential for this. Then I gone to my older friends to get an advice and they suggested me to address to Valeriy Leonidovich Makarov, at that time he was a chief of the mathematical-economic department of Institute of Mathematics, established by L.V.Kantorovich in late 50's. Of cause at that time I could not really know what does mean `mathematical economics'. This is why I asked what have I to answer, if one ask me on an area which I want to study. Advice was - `equilibrium'. When I continued, - `what is this', a friend thought a little bit and shrugging shoulders answered: `there is no making head or tail of it'. However I followed to advice and said to Makarov that I want to study economic equilibrium - a field of economic theory which he interested in at that time. So Valeriy Leonidovich being not interested what I know on this subject kindly agreed to be my scientific leader during 5th year of university learning. At that time there were no regular courses in modern economic theory at all - economics was pressed by ideology and the applications of mathematics reduced only to optimization settings. However there existed some books and I was forced to study its myself. Diploma being defended I started to work at Institute of mathematics as researcher-probationer. I would like to say that Valeriy Leonidovich was an important figure for mathematical economics to be developed in Academgorodok, and I think, in country as a whole as well. He supported different economic investigations, not only theoretical ones. He established in early 80's and successfully realized (one per two years) so called Novosibirsk school in mathematical economics. A lot of specialists of former Soviet Union attended this school, which sessions were going in unhurried and deep-thinking atmosphere, that promoted the exchange of ideas and increased the quality of investigations. Unfortunately followed by Marchuk (the president of Academy of Sciences at that time), Valeriy Leonidovich leaved Novosibirsk rather quickly. However under his leadership I have defended Ph.D. theses in 1985, devoted to the analysis of equilibria with externalities. Further I started to work autonomously. I am going to say that it is not easy to do it and the main difficulty is that when you are irregular educated in economics and when research group has small `critical mass', to work efficiently you have to read a lot of scientific literature to be well understanding modern problems, to be able to see them and only after that you have to suggest any kinds of new solutions.

One day I was suggested to explain the theory of non-standard analysis on our department seminar. I did not knew this and was forced to find an appropriate book, to study it and tell about theory. I liked this theory and later started to apply it efficiently in my investigations. In particular I proposed the notion of equilibrium with non-standard prices. It turned out, that the objects of this type do exist without strong survival assumption and as a result I created a kind of theory. At the end of 80's the ability for abroad business trips appeared. First I participated in conference in Praga (1989), then it was World Congress of Econometric Society in Barcelona (1990), where my results on non-standard equilibria were presented. I want to say that being under an euphoria of the democratic changes in Eastern Europe, Econometric Society and some of its members were motivated to find a financial support for researchers from former socialistic countries they to participate in World and European Congresses. It allowed me to participate in European congresses in Cambrige, Brussels, Maastriht, Uppsala and once again in World congress in Tokyo (1995). From each of these meetings I managed to find an idea and then I elaborated it during next year. This way I knew incomplete market theory and observing some problems there started to investigate them. However the sources of financial support finished quickly and later I never have been in this kind of meetings. Nevertheless to that time I already had good professional relations with Monique Florenzano, a researcher from France. She was a guest in our Institute several times and then organized a collaboration under exchange agreement between French CNRS and Russian academy. As a result I stayed in Paris several times in second part of 90's and we have written several common papers, including results for models with infinite dimensional commodity spaces (so my old love to functional analysis was realized). In these settings we applied the theory of semi-ordered spaces, so called linear vector lattices, grounded by Kantorovich in 30's. I published two papers in this field (one of them together with Monique) in Economic Theory, and Monique presented our result in World Congress in Seattle. Thus my results were presented in three last World Congresses. In second part of 90's I started also to think on the problem of correct introduction of coalition domination for incomplete markets - an open theoretical problem, the analysis of which seemed to be important. I have caught an idea in my mind to consider a concept based on the exchange of commodities contracts. Such kind of domination, via contracts, was proposed by Makarov on the frontier of 70's and 80's. However even being then developed by Kozyrev, this approach still was known only for a narrow circle of Russian researchers. Having obtained some preliminary results I suggested this theme for common investigations to my French friends - Monique and Pascal Gourdel, with him I also started to collaborate - first under French-Russian agreement and then as our mutual project for EERC (Economic Education and Research Consorcium). Unfortunately my French colleagues did not help me to elaborate these investigations and I was forced to do it myself. When the work under the project finished a kind of a new "theory of contracts" was created, which application to incomplete markets was the main result of this investigation. This year I presented the first part of this study in European Workshop on General Equilibrium in Athens and at the end of October 2002 the Expert Committee of EERC awarded my investigation with Zvi Griliches prize as the best study for year.
