Mitigation of pattern-effects in optical fibre communications by using an adaptive block encoding

Abstract:
We present theoretical and practical design methods for constrained codes that reduce the error rate in transmission lines in the presence of a pattern-effect. The pattern-effect manifests itself as a dependence of the transmission errors on the data being transmitted. An encoding scheme, which adapts code properties to any given patterning channel, is proposed. The code properties and behavior on specific channels are examined.
